In the same way a boxer can use pads to practice commonly used movements, in this drill, a wall works a combination of jammer attacks.
In this drill a the wall will be given 3 step combination of jammer attacks.
For example: Ok guys, the jammer is going to hit inside, middle, outside, on the whistle, ready?
Once the wall has been told the combination, the jammer will hit the wall in the areas stated as fast as she can.
The wall must move quickly and as a unit to each step.
This drill is about reinforcing the basic mechanical skills required for blockers to work together as a unit. The predictability in this drill is intentional - it means the players can work specific movements at high power and intensity.
Ontrack Leadership:
This is a great drill to embed leadership into.
To begin with, the coach can call the attack.
Once everyone is comfortable, then get the jammers to call the attack.
Then the blockers
At each stage, emphasise the importance of observation. The players, and especially the caller should be looking for weaknesses. Does the wall play well on the inside, outside or middle? does the jammer get thru in one place more than another?
The player calling the combination needs to take a leadership role and focus in on areas that need improvement.
As coach, to begin with you will be getting the team to do the activity properly, and coaching technique as it's needed. But as they become more comfortable with the drill, start focusing on the players calling the wall. Ask them what they are observing, and how they responding.
For example: Coach: Where's the jammer getting thru most of the time with you guys? Caller: We're having a bit of trouble with the duck on the outside Coach: What are you going to do about it? Caller: Move faster and lower on the outside Coach: Nice! lets see it!
Notice in this interaction the coach is not instructing the team how to solve the problem directly, she is directing the leadership in order to make them think, observe and make good independent decisions
Blockers should be able to perform this drill as a single unit, demonstrating the ability to cover the track quickly and precisely.
The jammer should hit the wall as hard and fast as she can. It should be emphasised to the jammer that her role is not to get thru - but to make her wall ready for game day. for the jammer, this drill can be used as conditioning, giving her the opportunity to hit blockers hard and fast.
Whoever is calling the wall should be demonstrating the ability to observe and fix a problem by directing the drill.
