Objective
Learn the basics of jam start positions and first 10 seconds of each jam. Review Basics from https://rules.wftda.com/02_gameplay.html
Activity
-
Review boundary lines for track
-
- "Back" or "Front"
- Back blockers focus on opposing jammer to
- immediately roll back to opposing jammer
- jammer becoming "5th blocker" if necessary to contain opposing jammer
- expect immediate contact with opposing jammer
- provide offense after opposing jammer is contained (3 seconds)
- Front blockers focus on containing opposing blockers in front of opposing jammer
- 5 seconds, roll back to sit on opposing blockers
- at whistle, roll back with opposing blockers if needed
- prevent lateral and forward movement of opposing blockers attempting offense or blocking friend jammer
-
DRILL: Divide and practice each start with walk through and in slow motion/positional play as needed (at least 3 times)
- Lead Jammer - "first Jammer who establishes superior position to the foremost in-play Blocker, having already earned a pass on all Blockers excluding those ahead of the Engagement Zone" denoted with 2 short whistles by jam ref that can now call off jam
- Passing the Star - "A team’s Jammer may transfer their position to their team’s Pivot by successfully completing a legal Star Pass. A legal Star Pass requires the Jammer to hand the Star to their team’s Pivot while both Skaters are upright, in bounds, and in play; and while neither Skater is en route to, or in queue for, the Penalty Box."
-
DRILL: Static star pass, legally
-
DRILL: Pack assembled with jammer A about to get lead with 4 B blockers in front, and jammer B being held by 4 A blockers in back. Drill starts with 2 short whistle blasts.
- jammer A skates away.
- jammer B removes helmet cover
- pivot B skates back legally to jammer B and both complete a LEGAL star pass.
- pivot B now becomes Jammer B and skates away from the pack.
- new blocker B (formerly jammer B) joins other B blockers
- Jam Line Start vs Pivot Line Start
- Jam Line Start
-
WHY? : Friend Jammer wants quick offense off the line, friend Jammer wants "friends in back start", enemy Jammer is fast or likes to gain speed, enemy Jammer likes moving packs + blockers
-
DRILL: Friendly blockers
- Pivot line start *2 types*
- Pivot line start 10 or more seconds (ADVERTISED)
-
WHY? : Friend jammer likes lots of room to speed up, friend jammer is faster than opposing jammer, opposing blockers are good at setting up offense off the line, opposing blockers are effective in front, opposing jammer really likes offense off the line
-
DRILL: Friend blockers line up at the pivot line, with offense on both lines. (opposite team does not know which offense to attend to) Whistle blows and friend jammer takes offense that is opposite opposing jammer path.
- Pivot line start, roll up AT 5 Seconds (SUPRISE)
-
WHY? : Forces opposing blockers to prioritize forming pack before able to block your jammer. No pack called at beginning of jam, requiring opposing blockers to immediately skate forward to reform pack or be called on a penalty. Friend blockers that roll up before the jam whistle must not skate forward/hold position, but no requirement for skating backwards. If opposing blockers are unaware of this (maybe new or tired), they may get called on a penalty for failure to reform or blocking out of play. Good for opposing blockers who are good at holding your jammer, good for jammers who like chaos and movement, good for blockers who can control speed well.
-
DRILL: Friendly blocks set up in front of opposing blockers on jam line. 5 seconds announced and friendly blockers QUICKLY roll up to pivot line and STOP. Jam start whistle followed by "no pack" or "pack is all" depending on how quickly opposing team can react. Friend jammer attempts to get out between distracted, surprised opposing blockers. Opposing jammer tries to follow.
