Cherry Bombe : Explanation of feedback principles

15
mins

Objective
Make sure the team understands basic priciples of feedback, and the goal of the training
Activity

Use this time to explain why feedback is important to you and your team, and what some basic principles are of good feedback.

Why is feedback important? (you can adapt this to your needs)

  • Feedback helps people grow
  • Feedback helps us avoid making the same mistake twice
  • Feedback can make people feel more confident and appreciated
  • Feedback helps us in getting to know one another

What basic principles are important when giving or receiving feedback?

  • Be specific (so not "you did well!")
  • Give feedback on things people can actively influence (so not "you looked tired today" or "you're very tall"
  • Actively listen when receiving feedback
  • Don't get defensive (react with "but..."), but be thankful for the feedback and ask questions to clarify when receiving feedback
  • Check when and how the other person would like to receive feedback if you're not sure
  • Let the other person know how and when you'd like to receive feedback

In addition, you can talk about when to give and ask for feedback.

  • When do you like to give feedback? Maybe during a fixed moment of the year (quarterly), or after every project/training?
  • When do you ask for feedback?

You can also choose to do this at the end, if you're giving a longer training on feedback.
