Athletes will pair up and rotate who is being pushed/pulled and who is being steady. -One partner will push the other using hands and feet (pushing or pulling, not kicking, hitting, etc.) against their partner's shoulders, hips, torso, arms, thighs, legs for 30-60 seconds. -The other partner attempts to keep their balance, remain steady and maintain their position. They may need to take a small step to readjust their stance but they should not be moving away from their partner. -Rotate roles.
-Gear up and repeat on skates.
Suggestion: Complete this drill off-skates first, then on-skates. On the initial round (for both partners) do not give athletes cues or suggestions about core/muscle engagement. Allow them to feel the implications and then review: -how to engage the core (cues may be: "push core out equally against your skin around your torso," "hold a giant bowl of punch," "imagine that your pelvis is a bucket full of water, keep the water in and keep it from spilling out of the front/back/side," "tuck tailbone underneath you," "if you were holding a flashlight between your butt-cheeks, make the light point in front of your feet, " etc. - different people will respond better to different cues) -options for staggering or widening stance -suggestions to engage all muscles throughout the body (irradiation), etc. Then repeat for another round so that athletes can immediately and directly feel the difference.
Athletes will feel a difference in their stability when engaging in contact.
