Objective
Players will improve their ability to hustle to the front quickly and catch the jammer
Activity
In this drill we'll look at hustling and re-catching jammers.
Divide the track into wagon wheel segments.
divide the players into 2 x 2 walls (blockers) for every one jammer.
2 blockers occupy a segment of the wagon, the second lot of 2 blockers occupy the next segment.
The jammer attacks the first 2 wall, if she gets past, she then immediately hits the next wall.
The first wall hustle to the next free track segment, so every time the jammer breaks loose from one wall, the next wall should be there waiting.
This drill is interesting because it allows a natural amount of unpredictability for the walls to deal with. Sometimes the jammer will get caught by the wall and take a short time to get thru, other times she will get a quick pass. On quick passes, the wall will have to hustle as fast as they can make a good catch, in slower passes they will time to assess their track position.
The coach can adjust the wall and blocker match-ups to suit the group. If jammers are getting thru too often, add an extra blocker in the wall.
Check For Learning
In this drill we're looking to see blockers demonstrate hustle and effectively anticipate jammers.
This drill exposes blockers to the fact they need to be fast and agile to make good catches. the coach should encourage that hustle, and keep the drill moving fast. Look to find on track leaders that will help keep the work rate high.
